Bed Sizes Canada: A Guide to Canadian Mattress Sizes (2022 Edition)

A woman of color sleeps soundly on a white bed while wearing a gold-colored silk sleep mask.

When it comes to mattress sizes, standard options include: crib, twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. But Canada also offers a few unique mattress sizes that don’t conform to the international standards.

In this article, we’ll tell you the exact dimensions of all the different bed sizes, starting with the standard mattress sizes and dimensions and then moving on to the less common sizes. We’ll also tell you what factors you need to consider when choosing a new mattress size. For a quick summary, see the charts before each section.

By the way, the sizes below only apply to Canada. Mattresses from the USA can vary by half an inch in length or width, but will still work with Canadian sheets and mattress frames, so you can use your current linens and bedding.

For detailed information about US mattress sizes, see our dedicated article on US mattress sizes.

Standard Mattress Sizes in Canada

Here, we’re going to go into more detail about the standard mattress sizes and who each size is best for. By the way, the differences in dimensions between the standard American and Canadian mattress sizes are never more than an inch, so if you end up going with an American mattress, standard sheet sizes from either country will work fine.

Crib Mattress Size

Crib mattresses are specifically meant to fit inside of cribs, hence the name. The standard crib size is 28 inches by 51 inches in Canada. These mattresses tend to be very thin and are only meant for infants and toddlers (anyone under 3 years old). In fact, they’re not meant to be more than 6 inches thick.

In general, crib mattresses should be relatively firm to support the infant’s body. A firm option is better than a softer option for crib mattresses.

Twin / Single Mattress Size

A twin mattress, also known as a single mattress, is the smallest of the standard bed sizes. In Canada, they’re 38 inches by 74.5 inches. Twin mattresses are typically used for children, but they’re also suitable for teens, or even some adults. A twin bed ideal for smaller rooms or bunk beds.

Twin / Single Extra Long Mattress Size

The twin XL mattress is five inches longer than the standard twin bed. As such, these mattresses are popular for taller adults, anyone over 6 feet tall. They can still fit into smaller rooms, and they’re a good choice for those who frequently have to accommodate guests.

You’ll frequently find a twin XL bed in college dorm rooms, since dorm rooms tend to be relatively small, but some college students may need the extra height.

Full / Double / Standard Mattress Size

A full-size mattress, also known as a double mattress or a standard mattress, is one of the most popular choices for single adults. These mattresses are 53 inches by 74.5 inches in Canada.

Full mattresses or double beds can also be shared by two adults, but they may be a bit tight for this purpose. But for a single adult, they provide plenty of room. They’re also a good choice to have on hand for overnight guests.

Queen Mattress Size

Queen mattresses are one of the most popular mattress choices, both for couples who don’t need too much space as well as individuals who like to spread out while sleeping. Queen size bed dimensions in Canada are 60 inches by 79.5 inches.

You can also find a split queen mattress, designed for couples who have different preferences regarding the firmness and type of mattress. These mattresses are split down the middle, and each half can be customized to what each person prefers. An adjustable bed frame may also allow you to create different levels of elevation in the two different mattress halves.

King Mattress Size

King beds have the greatest width of any standard mattress, making them ideal for couples who like to spread out, or even individuals who want the ultimate luxury. A Canadian king mattress is 76 inches by 79.5 inches. Because they’re so wide, they can even fit more than two people, e.g. parents who have young children.

You can also find split king mattresses. Similar to a split queen, this is a king-size bed that’s split in half, in order to accommodate a couple with different mattress preferences. The two halves make this bed the same size as two twin XL mattresses.

California King Mattress Size

The California king-size mattress is the longest standard mattress. At 72 inches by 84 inches, it’s four inches longer than a standard king, but it’s also four inches narrower. As such, California king mattresses are a good choice for couples where at least one person is very tall, i.e. 6 and a half feet or taller.

Though it’s four inches narrower than a standard king, a California king bed is still a great option for couples who like to spread out, or families who want to be able to fit more than two sleepers at a time. It’s also possible to find split California king beds, for couples who have different mattress preferences.

Unusual Mattress Sizes in Canada

Here, we’re going to take a look at some of the more unusual mattress sizes. While these non-standard sizes may be good options for some people and room sizes, keep in mind it’s often harder to find frames and sheets that fit these sizes, and they’re usually more expensive than standard frames and sheets.

Small Single Mattress

The small single mattress is even smaller than a traditional single. It’s 30 inches by 75 inches. This makes it eight inches narrower than a traditional twin-size mattress. It’s a good option for very small rooms or young children who don’t need a lot of space, but keep in mind children may outgrow these beds quickly.

Half Queen Mattress

In Canada, you can find a mattress called a half queen, which is just what it sounds like: half the width of a standard queen, at 30 inches by 79.5 inches. Buying two of these and placing them side-by-side on a standard queen frame allows you to create your own split queen mattress.

Queen RV Mattress

As the name suggests, the queen RV mattress is designed to fit inside of a standard RV (recreational vehicle). Made in Canada, it’s 60 inches by 74.5 inches, making it five inches shorter than a standard Canadian queen mattress.

Because these mattresses are designed specifically for RVs, they’re also generally a bit thinner than most other standard mattresses to reduce drag on the RV. As such, these are really only a good choice for those looking for a bed for their RV. They’ll be a bit thin for a standard bed frame.

Super King

The size of the Canadian super king mattress actually varies depending on the company, but in general, it’s about 72 inches by 78 inches. Don’t let the name fool you: It’s actually smaller than a standard Canadian king mattress. That said, because the size can vary, you can find super kings that are, in fact, longer or wider than standard kings.

For those who really need extra room and have some extra money to spare, you can also commission a super king to your exact specifications. Just be prepared to also commission a custom-made frame as well as sheets, or to make your own.

How to Choose the Right Mattress Size for You

A number of different factors need to be considered when choosing a new mattress size. In this section, we’ll go over these factors in detail.

Number/Size of People Using the Mattress

Perhaps the most important factor is who’s actually going to use the mattress. If it’s just for one person, you probably don’t need to consider the king or California king sizes. Couples, on the other hand, can most likely eliminate anything smaller than a queen.

You’ll also want to consider your height, and your partner’s height if you’re sharing the bed. Anyone over 6 feet will most likely be happiest with a queen mattress or larger (though a twin XL may also work).

Bedroom Size

Another important factor is the size of the bedroom in question. Remember that the room needs to be large enough not just to fit the bed, but any other furniture you want in your bedroom: bedside tables, chairs, couches, etc. You’ll also need enough space to move around the bed without being too cramped. See the above charts for recommendations about room size.

Bedroom Location

You’ll also need to consider where in your house the bedroom is, and keep in mind that you’ll need to be able to get the mattress into that room. This is not a trivial task, especially for larger beds. Is the bedroom on a higher floor? Will you be able to fit the mattress through every staircase and door frame on the way there? Consider this before making your decision.

Budget

Last but not least, think about how much money you are willing and able to spend on a new bed. Larger bed sizes tend to be significantly more expensive than smaller bed sizes, as they use more material. This is true even when looking at different sizes of the exact same brand and model.

So, for instance, if you’re stuck trying to choose between a king or a queen mattress, the queen will give you better value. You might also consider that the money you save buying a smaller mattress gives you more freedom to buy nicer bed accessories, such as more luxurious sheets.

To recap, there are many different mattress sizes. Standard sizes make it easy for you to find inexpensive frames and accessories, while a non-standard bed size can be a good option for those with specific needs or preferences who don’t mind searching for non-standard accessories to match.

The Hush mattress is an excellent choice for any of the six standard mattress sizes (not including crib): twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. It’s especially beneficial for those with back pain. This luxury hybrid mattress is a fraction of the price of most others, with proprietary Hush Iced Cooling Tech, pocketed coils, and triple-zoned support.

The Hush Iced Cooling Tech makes the foam on the exterior of the mattress — which is both super soft and super responsive — cool to the touch. We use phase change material to conduct heat away from your body and keep it away, allowing your body to remain at a consistent and cool temperature all night long.

The innerspring layer contains pocketed coils, i.e. individually-wrapped springs that are not interconnected. This means the bed provides motion isolation, so you won’t feel your dog jumping up on the bed or your partner rolling over in the middle of the night. Note that many luxury hybrids (that are much more expensive) have interconnected coils.

And the triple-zoned support provides extra firmness in the middle of the mattress, where it’s most needed. Unlike most other mattresses, this mattress won’t ever sag in the middle. It consistently provides just the right amount of support where you need it most.

We also offer other sleep essentials, including bamboo cooling sheets, a highly-rated weighted blanket, and much more. Try any combination of our products for the best sleep of your life, and rest assured that if you don’t love them, you can send them back after 100 days for a full refund — no questions asked.
