What is Tencel, and how is it eco-friendly?
Tencel is a fabric made from wood, specifically Forest Stewardship Council-certified eucalyptus wood. This certification means the wood is harvested sustainably.
Chips of cellulose are taken from the wood, dissolved into a pulp, mixed with a solvent, and then spun into threads. Similar methods are used for other materials, but a big difference is that Tencel uses a closed-loop system. During the creation process, no solvent that gets used gets dumped into the ecosystem. Instead, it’s recycled and reused, eliminating harmful waste.
Tencel itself has a lot of great qualities. It’s breathable, wicks away moisture, and is antibacterial and wrinkle-resistant. So not only is it great for the environment; it’s also great for your bed.
Why bother with all these fancy features?
It's easy to underestimate the importance of a good mattress protector, but what they do — or what they should do — is provide protection for your entire mattress, on multiple fronts, for a long time. A mattress itself is a big investment; you want to keep yours in good health for as long as possible.
